Detroit, MI – November 7, 2023 – voters in Detroit are casting ballots today, November 7, to elect a new mayor, with City Council President Mary Sheffield and Senior Pastor solomon Kinloch vying for the position. The outcome will determine who succeeds three-term Mayor Mike Duggan, who is currently running as an autonomous candidate for Michigan‘s open governor’s seat in 2026.
Sheffield, first elected to Detroit City Council in 2013 at age 26, has served as council president as 2022.A victory would make her the first woman and the first Black woman to serve as mayor of Detroit.
Kinloch is the senior pastor at Triumph Church, a Detroit-based congregation with over 40,000 members across multiple campuses. Prior to his religious leadership, Kinloch worked as an autoworker and was a member of the United Auto Workers union.
