The independent group “Case Breakers” claims to have solved the mystery surrounding the identity of the killer, known as the Zodiac. He is currently believed to have been responsible for at least five murders in Northern California between 1968 and 1969. Despite the new allegations, law enforcement officials have not closed the case and are continuing to investigate it, CNN writes.
Zodiac became famous for his letters to the police and local media, boasting of his murders until 1974. In them, he claimed to have killed 37 people, using a cipher in some and using bloodied parts of clothes.
A team of 40 former investigators, called “Case Breakers”, said in a press release that they had identified a man they believed to be the killer of the “Zodiac”. To confirm this conclusion, the team used new physical and medical evidence, as well as information from eyewitnesses.
The independent group also filed written statements in court with the man’s name, enclosing dozens of photos they found in a dark photographic room at his home. The man died in 2018.
In response to the new allegations, the San Francisco Police Department confirmed to CNN that the investigation is still ongoing. The FBI also did not confirm the allegations and commented that they have no new information to share.
The Breakers of the Cases statement also said that the man was responsible for the murder of Cherry Joe Bates in Riverside County, California.
County police officers ‘public information officials dismissed the allegation, saying he was definitely not the person responsible for Bates’ death. According to them, the only connection between the two cases was a handwritten letter received in the mail, in which it is claimed that Zodiac wrote.
