Despite the passing of writer Ada D’Adamo at 55, her book is still in contention for the 2023 Strega Prize.

The writer Ada D’Adamo died at the age of 55 due to an illness she had suffered from for some time. Born in Ortona, in Abruzzo, in 1967, D’Adamo passed away in her home in Rome. The writer was among the finalists of the 2023 Strega Prize with the novel “Come d’aria” and, as per the regulation, the book will remain in the competition.

“Come d’aria”, published by the Elliot publishing house in January 2023, is the debut novel by There’s D’Adamo. It is a book written over many years, the plot of which sees a mother who tells her disabled daughter about the discovery of her illness.




The novel has received unanimous acclaim from critics, and it is no coincidence that it was chosen among the 12 finalists of the 2023 Strega Prize, selected from 80 participants. The final five will be unveiled on June 7 in Benevento, while the winner will be known on July 6 at the National Etruscan Museum of Villa Giulia, in Rome.

“Come d’Aria” was selected for the final of Witch Literary Award 2023. The regulation provides that, even in the event of the author’s disappearance, the book remains in the competition.

“The death of Ada D’Adamo saddens us deeply. There was no time to get to know her, yet we loved her thanks to her book,” reads a note signed by the Strega Prize Steering Committee. “In presenting “Come d’aria” to the public, Elena Stancanelli, who presented it at the Strega Prize, said that “meeting this story is a gift”.
