Despite Lukashenko’s threats – the opposition calls for further strikes

The opposition in Belarus is calling for new elections and has therefore called for further protests. The warning from President Lukashenko impressed them little.

Notwithstanding President Alexander’s threats Lukashenko has the Opposition in Belarus called for nationwide strikes to force new elections. Opposition leader Svetlana Tichanovskaya said in a video message to her supporters on Friday that they should continue and expand the strikes and not allow themselves to be intimidated.

Opposition speaks of electoral fraud

Tichanovskaya left for Lithuania a few days ago, according to her campaign team under pressure from the authorities. Thousands of people have been demonstrating against Lukashenko for days. Employees in state-owned companies had also temporarily stopped working. The background to this is the elections on August 9, in which Lukashenko declared himself the clear winner. The opposition, however, speaks of electoral fraud.

According to a media report, the Belarusian Public Prosecutor’s Office opened investigations into the opposition on Thursday. Lukashenko had instructed the Interior Ministry to see that the protests against him end.
