The tragic comedy “Der Rausch” by Thomas Vinterberg won the Oscar for best international film on Sunday. The Dane has also been nominated for an Oscar for directing.
The Dane Thomas Vinterberg won the Oscar for best international film with his tragic comedy “Der Rausch”. “This film is about losing control in life – as soon as I have lost it,” said the delighted Dane in his acceptance speech. “I thank my wife and my screenwriter Tobias Lindholm – my shining role model.” to leading actor Mads Mikkelsen.
In tears, Vinterberg dedicated the film to his deceased daughter Ida. She died in a car accident shortly after filming began. “If we just dare to believe that she is here with us in some way – you could see her clapping and cheering with us here,” said the director. “We made this film as a monument to her. This is a miracle and Ida – you are part of that miracle”. The daughter was originally supposed to play one of the main characters. Your classmates can be seen in the film as students.
“The intoxication” should inspire you to “forget yourself”
The film is about Martin, played by Mads Mikkelsen, a passionate teacher. Together with three other friends he talks about the theory of a Norwegian philosopher, according to which they should be more productive with more alcohol in their blood. You decide to do a social experiment and hold a level during work hours. After the first successes, the four friends are enthusiastic. But of course the experiment has serious consequences.
According to Vinterberg, “Der Rausch” has “no message” and is not intended to “advertise alcohol,” said the Dane in an interview with the AFP agency. The film, which was once planned as a play, should rather show: an “inspired life”, “forgetting yourself” and curiosity. The Danish tragicomedy with Mads Mikkelsen, Thomas Bo Larsen, Lars Ranthe, Magnus Millang and Maria Bonnevie is scheduled to open in Germany on July 15th.

Thomas Vinterberg is the first Dane to be nominated for an Oscar for directing

This made him the first Dane in this category nominated was. However, the award went to Chloé Zhao for “Nomadland”. In his home country, “Der Rausch” – in the original: “Druk” – was the biggest box-office hit on the screen last year and thus his most popular film in Denmark to date.
