Deputy sheriff stabbed while serving warrant in NY – Telemundo New York (47)

NEW YORK – An upstate New York sheriff’s deputy was stabbed in the leg during a confrontation with a man who then barricaded himself in his home for several hours, police said.

The Post-Standard of Syracuse reports that Luke Gaffney, 39, was arrested early Saturday after an hours-long standoff and charged with aggravated battery of a police officer.

The encounter began at 5 p.m. Friday, when two officers went to a home in Aurelius to execute a court order ordering a man later identified as Gaffney to surrender his weapons, Cayuga County Sheriff Brian Schenck said.

Gaffney refused to comply with the order and stabbed one of the officers in the leg multiple times during a brief fight, Schenck said.

Gaffney then barricaded himself inside the home for several hours until police negotiators persuaded him to leave, authorities said. Schenck said he was detained without further incident.

It was unclear if Gaffney had an attorney who could speak for him. The injured deputy was treated at a hospital and released.
