Dent or start of crisis? HSV asked after the Derby bankruptcy

Hamburg (dpa) – After the 108th Hamburg city derby, which messed up, HSV coach Tim Walter greeted his colleague Timo Schultz with the words: “We will meet again in the second leg”.

It sounded almost provocative, yet it makes it clear how much his Hamburger SV’s 0: 3 against city rivals FC St. Pauli has pestered Schultz about him and his players. Walter would like to avoid another derby to neighboring Millerntor by promoting himself from the 2nd Bundesliga.

For the fourth time in a row, the great HSV lost the host game to underdog Kiez – undesirable repetition. “It’s not fun to lose here,” said annoyed HSV player Jonas Meffert.

Hamburger SV were six matches unbeaten in the 2nd Bundesliga and embarked on the shortest business trip of the season as leaders. The team had won eight overseas victories over the seasons and set a league record. But all the good numbers were gone after a memorable evening with the highest derby defeat since 1: 4 on 14 February 1960 in the Northern Oberliga.

Red for HSV captain Schonlau

Everyone agreed that the red card for HSV captain Sebastian Schonlau (28th) after an emergency stop against St. Pauli forward Etienne Amenyido was the key moment of the match. “The decisive scene was obviously the red card,” said Walter. Schultz agreed: “I think Schonlau’s dismissal had a big impact on the game.”

Despite being outnumbered, Walter didn’t see his team give up. Even with ten men, he had the game “really under control”. “We have more control and more possession. We tried to play our game, this is what we stand for, “he said. But this time it didn’t happen to us.

What must be more worrying for him: Even before the dismissal, HSV had fought against FC St. Pauli. Schultz had trained his lineup from a three-to-one to five-man defense in just a few days (“The boys did really well today.”). The guests had a hard time making it, they didn’t like the early start.

Is it just a technical problem or the possible start of a small crisis? As in the 1-1 draw against 1. FC Kaiserslautern, Millerntor lacked the playful ease and dominance with which HSV otherwise crushes opponents. “We know what we have done this season. We know what kind of quality we have and we don’t let it down. We will do our thing,” declared goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes combatively.

Victory in the derby should give St. Pauli a boost

FC St. Pauli showed what a victory in a derby can do: was there a crisis? Have there been seven games without a win? Was there a danger of falling into the dangerous areas? Eric Smith (61st), Marcel Hartel (74th) and David Otto (89th) brought their fans to a long-missed emotional level in front of the 29,205 spectators of the sold-out Millerntor Stadium.

We hope this derby win will give us a boost for the rest of the season. If we show what we can do, I think we will be one of the best teams in the league, “said captain Jackson Irvine.” Victory gives us confidence, “Schultz was convinced.” Now it’s happening for us in quick succession. “

This applies to both teams: in the second round of the DFB Cup, they both travel to high-level opponents. HSV will have to go to reigning champion RB Leipzig on Tuesday. The next day, FC St. Pauli are guests of the surprise Bundesliga team SC Freiburg. “We have plans again for Tuesday,” Heuer Fernandes announced for HSV. For St. Pauli co-captain Leart Paqarada it is clear: “We are traveling to Breisgau with confidence”.

He and his teammates can enjoy the feeling of being city champions for another six months. The rivals will meet again at the Volksparkstadion on Matchday 29 next April. Not only does Walter hope from HSV that it can be the last for the moment.
