Dennis Hauger, Motorsport | The messages hailed when the Sports Gala revelation came:

TORGGATA (Nettavisen): Dennis Hauger is about to become both a Norwegian and international sports star after his achievements on the motorway in recent years.

The 18-year-old from Aurskog won the Formula 3 championship last season, and in 2022 will drive Formula 2 for the Prema team he lifted the trophy for. At the same time, he is under the wings of Formula 1 world champion Red Bull, in one of their talent drivers.

It is clear that the name of the race car driver is starting to resonate, because it was a big press conference when Hauger invited to a meeting just before the season run-up starts in Bahrain.

– You notice that things have changed after things went well last year, so it’s cool that people are starting to notice what I do. It is important for my further commitment, Hauger tells Nettavisen.

Increased attention

The much talked about Netflix series Drive to Survive has given Formula 1 an insane boost, and Hauger says that he is experiencing increasing interest in this country as well.

– I’m closer than any other Norwegian has been before me, so I’m not necessarily surprised that interest is growing. Formula 1 is a great sport, so it’s cool to see that Norway throws itself when you get a Norwegian driver who can end up there.

Here you can see the trailer for the series:

On social media, Hauger has begun to gather a large following, and shares much of his everyday life as a top athlete. It has been a conscious choice according to the main character himself.

– Before, I was a pretty shy boy, but have built up a character who has learned to like the attention. I held my first press conference in English when I was 11 years old, and have almost spoken more English than Norwegian in recent years. It has therefore become a lifestyle, which is necessary to adapt when one is in this “game”.

– Will it help you as a potential Formula 1 driver to be a profile that the media and fans look up to?

– If you show a positive profile, then it will naturally be more lucrative for sponsors and supporters to be part of the journey. I thought it was cool to see more and more people sign up, and want to support what I do. There’s a lot of work behind this, so I thought it’s fun so far with the attention I get.

– Pretty sick

He has already felt the pressure from the Norwegian fans. When the boy from Aurskog was not nominated for the award for “breakthrough of the year” at the Sports Gala, several people raised their eyes.

The Norwegian Motorsport Association, on the other hand, is not a member of the Norwegian Sports Association, so motorsport athletes do not have the opportunity to be nominated.

– I received extremely many messages. Of course, it’s a shame that you do not get the opportunity to win such prizes, but that’s the way it is. It’s pretty sick how much came in my inbox of people who thought I deserved nomination.

The 18-year-old told the press corps that he will use the first year in Formula 2 as learning, without any pressure from either Prema or Red Bull to fight for top positions already now.

– You have a budget of 21 million kroner this season, do you feel any extra pressure that you have to deliver?

– Yes, I feel it. You can not do this forever, so it is important to take advantage of the opportunities you get. Fortunately, it has been easier to get things in place this year, when the interest has been greater.

– Must keep up with the class

Harald Huysman has, among other things, helped the Finnish world champion in Formula 1 Kimi Räikkönen, but now he is the manager of Dennis Hauger. He says that the team around the driver works hard to help the Norwegian up and down.

– As his profile grows, we connect with some people with whom we have work meetings, who are specialists in, among other things, rhetoric and branding. We do this to create an attractive athlete. He is not a world star yet, but we must follow the lesson when the attention around him grows, he tells Nettavisen.

– He has a natural relationship with the press, but he did not like it at first. Dennis received a stern message from his father at the beginning of his career that he had to appear before the media, because it is part of the game. Now he has developed into a media-savvy and media-capable guy.

– What standing does he have in Red Bull, right now?

– It is rising sharply. At the same time, you are never better than your last race, so it is clear that it is changing fast. Now you have to keep doing the work you have to do, even if you have been successful.

March 20 marks the start of the first Formula 2 race of the season, which will be run in Bahrain.
