Dengue: high viral circulation over a large part of the territory

The spatial distribution of biologically confirmed cases shows a further intensification and extension of viral circulation over a large part of the territory except the far north of the island which seems to be spared to date. The Management Committee met on June 5 and validated the proposal of the Technical Committee for Dengue Monitoring regarding the transition to the confirmed dengue epidemic phase (Phase 4 level 1 of the PSAGE).

The cumulative estimated number of clinically suggestive cases of dengue seen in city medicine during the last four weeks (from May 25 to June 21, 2020) is 1,150 cases. In week 2020-25 (from June 15 to 21), the weekly number of cases (317 cases) reached its highest level ever recorded since the first breaches of thresholds in November 2019. It is obviously much higher than seasonal values for the period. Between November 4, 2019 and June 21, 2020, the cumulative estimated number of cases clinically suggestive of dengue fever is 6,070 cases.

The South, the area most affected by the epidemic

During the last four weeks (from May 25 to June 21, 2020), the biologically confirmed cases of dengue spread to 29 of the 34 municipalities of Martinique. The highest incidences are more observed in the South of Martinique where 7 communes report incidences higher than 10 cases per 10 000 inhabitants (Le Marin, Le Diamant, Les Anses d’Arlet, Rivière-Salée, Sainte-Anne, Sainte -Luce, and the Trois-Ilets) testifying to an almost uninterrupted viral circulation for months.

The north of Martinique is not spared where 6 municipalities also have incidences of more than 10 cases per 10,000 inhabitants (Schœlcher, Case Pilote, Le Carbet, Morne-Vert, Saint-Joseph and Trinité). In the Far North Atlantic and Caribbean, only 3 municipalities remained, free from viral circulation for the period from May 25 to June 21, 2020.

Six serious indigenous cases of dengue fever were hospitalized in an intensive care or intensive care unit. Two of these 6 cases died (February and June 2020) and classified as being directly linked to dengue.
