Dengue: first death in Martinique

While health officials communicate on the 2019 nCoV coronavirus, dengue kills. Declared in July 2019 in Martinique after having diagnosed a first case in February 2019, the epidemic of Dengue has just killed its first in Martinique. “On February 10, ARS Martinique was informed by the Center hospitalier universitaire de Martinique (CHUM) of the presence of three patients hospitalized for dengue fever, showing signs of the severity of the disease. Unfortunately a death is to be deplored among these three patients“Says the agency in a statement. Since July 2019, the number of cases suggestive of dengue is 2,100 in Martinique. According to Jacques Rosine, of public health France Antilles, “Even if today, we note a certain stabilization – we are between 150 and 200 cases which are estimated each week -, we have a circulation which remains active in certain communes of the south of the island. Martinique is still in epidemic risk“.

In addition, a committee of parliamentary inquiry chaired by the ex-minister of Overseas Ericka Bareigts, PS deputy of Reunion, should start its hearings tomorrow. In Reunion, 20 deaths have been recorded, including 12 directly related to dengue.
