Dengue fever: the number of cases decreased at the end of 2019, 3 outbreaks remain active

The circulation of dengue fever continues in Reunion, but the number of cases fell over the end of the year. From December 30 to January 4, 3 cases of dengue fever were confirmed on the island. The South and the North are concerned. After the last rains, the authorities call for the greatest caution.

While the number of confirmed dengue cases has decreased over the period from December 30 to January 4, the epidemic is not over. The virus is still rampant on the island. Three cases were therefore reported in one week in the South, in Saint-Louis and Saint-Pierre, and in the North in Saint-Denis.

Traffic remains active in certain neighborhoods

Since mid-December, the authorities have noted active circulation of dengue fever in 3 districts of the island: Plateau Goyave in Saint-Louis, Trou d´eau in La Saline-les-Bains and Lotissement Satec in Saint-André.

The threat of a new epidemic is still hovering

In view of the rains of the past few days, an increase in contamination cannot be excluded. Authorities still fear a new epidemic wave in the coming months. They therefore remind the population of the importance of protecting themselves from mosquito bites, even when sick.

Since the epidemic began in 2017, 24,951 indigenous cases have been confirmed and 20 deaths, including 12 directly related to dengue, have been recorded.
