Dengue Fever and Virus Outbreak Causes Chaos across India, Nearly 300 Patients Hospitalized

Over the past month, nearly 300 people including children have been admitted to Kanpur’s Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital following the outbreak of dengue fever, malaria and viruses in the city.

As per hospital authorities, some patients have been diagnosed with dengue fever and malaria. However, no deaths have been reported due to this disease.

“More than 250 viral fever patients have been admitted to our hospital since about a month. Most of the patients have recovered while some patients with viral pneumonia developed complications. The death rate is quite low. Also, 25 patients have been treated for Dengue, including 10 children and some have been treated for malaria as well. However, no one died from this disease in the hospital,” said Dr. Sanjay Kala, the person in charge of Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital told ANI.

Uttar Pradesh Health Minister Jai Pratap Singh has previously informed that the state government is taking all possible steps to control the outbreak of viral fever in the state.

The minister has informed that the government has noticed the gap in the work of the officials and that is the main reason for the virus outbreak in the city.

Two more deaths from viral fever and dengue fever were reported from UP Firozabad, bringing the death toll in the district to 62. Additional Director (Health) Dr AK Singh said several teams were working to control the outbreak.

The number of dengue cases in Indore in Madhya Pradesh has reached 225, including one death, after 22 people were detected sick. Of the 22, five were children and eight were women, said District Malaria Officer Dr Daulat Patel.

Meanwhile, hospitals in the nation’s capital also witnessed a spike in the number of seasonal flu cases among children and some even required hospitalization. Doctors at PSRI Hospital, Delhi say that 70 percent of children who come to OPD have flu-like symptoms. Aakash Healthcare in Dwarka also said they see 50-60 cases of viral illness every day in their OPD.

Earlier on Saturday, Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan highlighted the challenges emerging from Dengue fever Serotype-II in 11 states is associated with more cases and complications than any other form of the disease.

He suggested that states should take steps such as early detection of cases, operationalization of fever helplines, adequate supply of testing kits, larvicides and drugs, deployment of rapid response teams for immediate investigation.

He also stressed the need for public health measures such as fever surveys, contact tracing, vector control, blood bank alerts to maintain adequate blood stocks and blood components, especially platelets.

States are also being urged to also carry out IEC campaigns on helplines, vector control methods, home source reduction and dengue symptoms, the Union Health Ministry said in a statement.

In light of the upcoming festival season, the ministry is also directing the states to ensure all necessary precautions and effective enforcement to avoid mass gatherings and crowded closed spaces.
