Demolition of the last old blocks of Mahatma Gandhi has started (Mechelen)


In the Mahatma Gandhi district in Mechelen, the demolition of the last two outdated residential blocks has started. A delegation from the city council gave the starting shot on Tuesday.

Mayor Alexander Vandersmissen (Vld-Groen-m +) and his party colleague Arthur Orlians, chairman of Woonpunt, crawled into a crane to start the demolition. With the demolition of the last two outdated residential blocks, the large-scale renovation of the social residential area is gradually entering its final phase.

The work must be completed in 2023. By then, 169 new housing units will be added. In total, Woonpunt, with support from the Flemish Social Housing Agency (VMSW), is investing 130 million euros in the renovation and renovation of some 700 homes. The project has been running since 2012. svh
