Flash floods in early September
The devastating flash floods at the beginning of September, which killed several people, also made it clear that the city urgently needs to prepare for the effects of climate change. And like in many other US cities, there are calls to reform the police force, which has come under criticism for violence against black people.
Adams can draw on his own experiences with the police. Born into poverty in Brooklyn to a cleaning lady and a butcher, Adams was a police officer himself for 22 years before going into politics. In 1995 he founded an organization of black police officers to fight against racism in the security forces.
