Delaware enforces Holocaust education, genocide study

JTA – The US state of Delaware will require education about the Holocaust in middle and high school curricula starting in the year 2021-2022.

A bill signed late last month by Governor John Carney requires public schools to implement a curriculum on the Holocaust and the study of genocide for grades 6 through 12. Each district will be able to develop its own program, reported Tuesday the Delaware State News.

The Delaware Jewish Federation’s Halina Wind Preston Holocaust Education Committee, an interfaith volunteer group made up of Holocaust survivors and their families, Holocaust scholars, teachers, members clergy and community advocates will provide advice and resources, according to the article.

The bill was passed unanimously by the Delaware state government.

Ann Jaffe, a Holocaust survivor living in Delaware, attended the signing via video conference. She has told her story in the House and Senate in the past and has often intervened in schools across the state for decades to recount her experience.

“I am the last generation of direct witnesses and I am 89 years old. I’m happy to know that when I’m gone, the schools will continue our work, ”Jaffe said in a statement upon signing. “Teaching about the Holocaust and genocide in Delaware schools is essential. How else could we expect our children to remember and learn from a story they don’t know? “
