deion Sanders Believes Son Shedeur Will Be Browns’ Starting Quarterback in 2025
CLEVELAND – Deion Sanders expressed strong confidence that his son, Shedeur Sanders, will be the Cleveland Browns’ starting quarterback by 2025, revealing the reasoning behind Shedeur’s reluctance to be drafted into a situation where he’d be backing up Lamar Jackson for an extended period. The comments shed light on the Browns’ quarterback situation and offer a timeline for the rookie’s potential ascension.
Sanders explained that the browns and Baltimore Ravens both expressed interest in drafting Shedeur, but his son made it clear he didn’t want to be in a position where playing time wasn’t readily available. “I played for Baltimore, so me and [former Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome] are cool,” Deion said. “We understood that whole conversation, and he wanted to talk to Shedeur and also he wanted to talk to me. And I put Shedeur on the phone, and I don’t want to say how it went, but how in the world can somebody fault him for saying or thinking, ‘Why in the world would I go back up Lamar [Jackson] for 10 more years?’ I’ve never sat on the bench and said, ‘Well, I learned a lot today.'”
The Browns ultimately selected Shedeur with the 144th pick, trading up to secure him. Currently, he is third on the depth chart behind starter joe Flacco and fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel, who was drafted in the third round. Shedeur has been primarily running the scout team offense in practice alongside Gabriel and practice squad quarterback Bailey Zappe.
Despite the current depth chart, Sanders remains focused on the future. After the Browns’ Week 2 loss to the Ravens, Shedeur stated, “My response is I’m focused on the now. I don’t really talk about anything in the past, and whatever happened in the past, it is what it is. I’m more focused on now. I’m more focused on how this game that we just gone and had and figuring out how to move forward from now.”
The browns are 1-2, having secured their first win of the season on Sunday against the Green Bay Packers, 13-10. Flacco, in his second stint with Cleveland, has struggled, throwing the second-most interceptions in the NFL (four) and posting a 38.2 Total QBR, ranking 28th out of 32 qualifying quarterbacks. However, Coach Kevin Stefanski has confirmed Flacco will start in Week 4 against the Detroit Lions.
