“Definitely after my career”: Klopp wants to go back to Germany

Already a legend in Liverpool, Jürgen Klopp wants to return to Germany at the latest after the end of his career as a football teacher. Before retiring from football, however, he could still envisage an engagement as a national coach, said Klopp.

Football coach Jürgen Klopp will return to Germany at some point. “Definitely to live, after my career. Most likely even to Mainz,” said Klopp in an interview with SWR Sport. In the Rhineland-Palatinate capital, the current coach of the English champions Liverpool FC worked from 1990 to 2008 first as a player and then as a coach.

The 53-year-old has led the traditional English club Liverpool to the first championship title in 30 years. Klopp is still floating on cloud nine. It will probably take some time before this feeling of happiness has settled. But the time window is not important because the title is “for eternity. It is much better than not being a master”.

Klopp reiterated his stay with the Reds until 2024 – when his contract in Liverpool, which was prematurely extended after winning the Champions League last year, expires. “Four years in Liverpool,” said Klopp. After that, after nine years on Anfield Road, he wanted to “do nothing for a year,” said the soccer coach.

Perhaps for the first time he would then be able to do “what I want, what I want to do. Maybe a club, a national team or nothing at all”. According to SWR, he added smugly: “But in five years the world can look very different again.”

In the short term, Klopp is looking forward to returning to his wife in Germany in the Premier League after the end of the season and “going back to the restaurant and enjoying the new normal in Germany.” The Federal Republic solved the corona crisis well compared to its adopted home Great Britain, Klopp praised.
