Defenseman Jacob Trouba named New York Rangers captain

NEW YORK — Defenseman Jacob Trouba has been named the 28th captain in New York Rangers history.

Trouba, 28, becomes the first Rangers captain since Ryan McDonagh in 2017-18. The team has not had a captain for the past four seasons.

“Since joining the Rangers, Jacob has consistently demonstrated the qualities needed in a leader on and off the ice,” Rangers president and general manager Chris Drury said in a statement. As we look to take another step forward as an organization, he is the role model for all of our players and the perfect choice to be our captain.”

Trouba had been named to Rangers’ assistant captains group ahead of the 2020-21 season. He played 597 NHL games with the Rangers and Winnipeg Jets, scoring 62 goals and 195 assists.

Last season, Trouba had 11 goals and 28 assists in 81 games. He also blocked 177 shots, the second most in the NHL, and applied 207 hits.

“As soon as I arrived here, it was obvious that Jacob had a certain presence in the locker room and with his teammates. He exemplifies what you look for in a captain, Rangers head coach Gerard Gallant said. He is the perfect person to help the team take the next step.”

The Rangers acquired Trouba from the Jets in June 2019 for defenseman Neal Pionk and a first-round pick. The Jets selected him in the first round, ninth overall, in the 2012 draft.

A respected voice in the locker room, Trouba is also involved in the New York community. He supports the Garden of Dreams Foundation and the Junior Rangers hockey program, which have a significant impact on many children in the greater New York area.

Trouba, Jared Spurgeon of the Minnesota Wild and Roman Josi of the Nashville Predators are the only three NHL defensemen currently captaining their team.
