Defense spent more than 34,000 euros on records and books for the centenary of the Legion

The old hymns of the Legion adapted to flamenco generated a cost of 12,000 euros to the Ministry of Defense, which at the end of 2020 released 8,000 albums with those songs. This is clear from the responses sent by the Government to the ERC deputy Joan Josep Nuet and the Commitment senator Carles Mulet, who had formulated a series of questions to the Executive on this matter.

Last january, Public He reported that Defense had included in its catalog of official publications an album with 13 traditional songs of the Legion in flamenco version. “On the occasion of the celebration of the centenary of the Spanish Legion, emblematic unit of our Army, known for its particular idiosyncrasy, for its effectiveness in combat and, above all, for the courage of its men and women, the soul of the legionnaire is passion, joy and deep feeling linked to song and music“read the product description.

Among the songs were “The boyfriend of death”, “To the right goes the Tercio” or “Legionary Knights”, performed by different artists in this field. The price of the album, which is still available in the official store of the ministry, is 10 euros. Public He then asked Defense what the cost of this publication had been and how many records had been sold, but there was no answer.

In this context, Nuet sent a written query to the Government in which it requested precisely that information. In his reply, the Executive indicates that they were edited 8,000 copies through a public procurement process, which implied an expense of 12,087 euros.

Defense does not clarify how many sales have been registered so far, nor the money collected. On this point, it is limited to pointing out that “the amounts of the sales of the publications that are part of the editorial program of the Ministry of Defense, made through the authorized points of sale or the online platform, are remitted, in their entirety , to an income restricted account of the Public Treasury “.

Books and magazines

In another response addressed to the Senator of Compromís Carles Mulet –Who had also registered a question about this same matter–, the ministry details other expenses in publications for the centenary of the Legion that was commemorated in 2020. In that document, the Government details that, in addition to the legionary disc, 1,000 copies were published from the catalog of the exhibition “100 years of the Legion”, at a cost of 4,080 euros.

They were also destined 16,320 euros for the edition of 2,000 books of “The Legion, 100 years, 100 images”, as well as another 1,794 euros for a circulation of 3,050 copies of an extraordinary number of the official magazine of the Legion. The total amount of the Commemorative CDs, books and magazines reached 34,281 euros.
