DNA research by the organization Bij12 shows that a wolf bit two sheep in Nederweert on January 21, a sheep in Stramproy on January 25 and another two sheep in Nederweert on January 29. The total damage of this has been estimated at more than 1200 euros. Now the deer also appear to have fallen victim to a wandering wolf, De Limburger reports.
Wolves have been on the prowl in the region for some time, they have been observed more often in the north of Belgian Limburg, Brabant and the Weerterland. In the outskirts of Afferden, eight sheep have also died after an attack by a wolf.
Veluwe
Gelderland has expanded the wolf’s habitat in that province. After the first wolves in the Netherlands settled in the province, the northern and middle parts of the Veluwe were designated as a wolf area. The northern part has now been expanded and a southern part of the Veluwe is added, because a she-wolf had also settled there. That animal was probably killed at the beginning of this month, but a male is said to be walking around in the Southwest Veluwe.
