Death toll rises by 30, now 3,631 confirmed corona infections in the Netherlands | NOW

Thirty people in the Netherlands have died since Friday from the consequences of the coronavirus, reports the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) on Saturday. This brings the death toll to 136. The number of confirmed infections rose by 637 to a total of 3,631.

The majority of the deaths were between 80 and 84 years old, while the youngest patient was 63 years old, according to the RIVM.

Compared to Friday, the increase in the number of patients admitted to hospital has been remarkable. That number increased by more than two hundred illnesses in the last 24 hours.

Most people who have tested positive live in North Brabant. There, 1,180 people are infected with the coronavirus. Then South Holland with 486, North Holland with 461 and Limburg with 318 corona patients.

Worldwide, more than 275,000 infections with the COVID-19 virus have now been identified: according to the latest figures from Johns Hopkins University, there are a total of 275,469.

RIVM only reports confirmed infections, the actual number is higher

Not everyone is tested for the virus, so the actual number of infections with the coronavirus in the Netherlands is higher than the number reported by RIVM. In addition, not every infected person notices that he or she carries the virus, because not all infected persons get complaints.

The institute would also like to report the number of cures, but that is difficult to map. Unlike an infection, it is not mandatory to report a cure. RIVM is collecting these figures.

The coronavirus in short

  • The coronavirus mainly spreads through sneezing and cough drops. The virus can be transmitted directly from person to person or (for a limited time) through surfaces such as door handles.
  • An infected person infects two to three others on average. Precautions are necessary to contain this.
  • The vast majority of patients have mild (flu-like) complaints.
  • Nearly all deaths involve the elderly or other frail, such as heart, lung or diabetes patients. If everyone complies with the measures, this reduces their risks.
