Death of three people with H1N1 flu

A nurse, a customs officer and a teenager died at CHU Doctor Benzerdjeb of Oran following complications from the H1N1 flu, local sources reported on Tuesday, February 18. The same sources claim that the customs officer succumbed to the virus after spending 1 week in a deep coma.

Thus, this seasonal flu also called influenza kills. The three victims succumbed to the virus very quickly, despite being taken care of by hospital services. They were intubated and put on a ventilator. Before the customs officer’s death, a teenager died last Friday following heart and respiratory complications due to flu symptoms. The teenager’s death was followed by that of a 40-year-old woman, a nurse in the cardiology department of the same hospital, who had the same symptoms.

Worried doctors

The three deaths seriously cast doubt on the statements of the hospital’s communications unit, who spoke of severe seasonal flu. Doctors have expressed concern that “seasonal flu can indeed kill, but often they are elderly patients with chronic illnesses.” They add that in these cases of death, “we have young subjects who presented the same clinical picture and the same complications very quickly”.

Doctors report that “5 cases with the same signs are hospitalized either in intensive care, in the CMU, or in infectious”. The doctors also wanted to warn about “the lack of resources, the unsuitable working conditions and the unavailability of Tamiflu”.

The deaths of these three patients and the hospitalization of 5 other affected patients call on the health services of the province to take the necessary measures to prevent the spread of this virus and thus prevent an epidemic.
