First African president of the International Basketball Federation (Fiba), the Senegalese Abdoulaye Sèye died at 90 this Saturday June 27 in Dakar. The former basketball player is a member of the Fiba hall of fame.

« A huge loss for the sports world and especially the Senegalese, African and world basketball family. It is with these words that the Senegalese Minister of Sports, Matar Bâ, paid tribute to the former president of Fiba Abdoulaye Sèye who died on the night of Saturday 27 June to Sunday 28 June.

Successor to Lamine Diack

Former basketball player in the Senegalese championship, Abdoualye Sèye has had a real career as a sports leader for more than 40 years. A banker by training, the Louga native started out as an international referee, notably participating in the 1975 Women’s Basketball World Cup in Santiago de Cali (Colombia). In 1974, Abdoulaye Sèye took the reins of the Senegalese Basketball Federation until 1993, the year he was brought in at the head of Fiba Africa.

Five years later, it was the consecration, when he was elected president of the International Basketball Federation after 4 years as vice-president. He thus takes over from the American George Killian and becomes the first African to head the governing body of basketball at world level.

After leaving Fiba in 2002, he was elected member of the hall of fame in 2010. Meanwhile, he had succeeded Lamine Diack at the head of the Senegalese Olympic Committee from 2002 to 2006.
