Dear kids, welcome to the ward: the third year students of Medicine begin their internship

ALEXANDRIA. It is already the third year. Medicine students from the University of Eastern Piedmont, located in Alessandria, will enter the ward from next week for their internship.

A first milestone that excites not only the 47 students who will be welcomed by tutors in the departments of Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Geriatrics, Cardiology, Pulmonology, Neurology and General Surgery. Tomorrow, due to the pandemic, the “White Coat Ceremony” will be held without an audience in the Aula Magna of the Hospital, in the presence of the academic authorities and of the “Santi Antonio e Biagio e Cesare Arrigo”. Students will enter the wards on Monday 8 March.

«It is a fundamental stage for the training of the doctor. – said the Rector Gian Carlo Avanzi -. The relationship with the patient is the core of our profession which must include the ability to listen, interpret and identify the patient’s needs and health problems but at the same time the ability to synthesize and investigate as well as dialogue and empathy. A complex world of notions and experiences will open up to young students and they will be fascinated to the point of falling in love with the most beautiful profession in the world ».

For Marco Krengli, president of the School of Medicine, “this passage, during the pandemic, is of particular significance in terms of commitment and responsibility, which represent essential characteristics in the medical profession”.

“It is the day that marks an emblematic moment in the training course”, says Sandra D’Alfonso, president of the degree course in Medicine and Surgery, who adds: “Since 2018, the internship aimed at qualifying the profession is was brought forward to the curricular period and the commitment of the student and the tutor is even more important: at the end of the sixth year the students must be ready to practice the profession “.

For the Alexandrian hospital it is a historic milestone, as Giacomo Centini, general manager of “Santi Antonio e Biagio” says: “A fundamental step in the path that Antonio Maconi, director of the Research and Innovation Department, started years ago, creating a network with all institutions. These young students are important lifeblood, an opportunity for renewal for our hospital, which is undergoing an important transformation and reorganization work. Welcome greetings and good work to them and the tutors. The day seals the synergy with the University of Eastern Piedmont, with which we are creating a path of sharing and collaboration that has as a common goal the attention to students and the patient “.

Alfredo Muni, director of Nuclear Medicine and coordinator of the tutoring activity, spoke of “strong commitment and responsibility”: “Within the departments in which the students will enter they will be given an imprint designed to mark the professional path and this experience the tutor, the first patients and the knowledge acquired in the field will remember ”.
