Dead race ahead of elections in Sweden

The election in Sweden in ten weeks’ time is set to be a nerve-wracking nail-biter, with another four years of political chaos as a possible result. It shows a recent average measurement from TV 2.

– Everything indicates that this will be extremely even, says TV 2’s election analyst Terje Sørensen.

He has prepared a weighted average of the last five polls over the keel. Only 0.2 percentage points separate the red and blue sides.

Should this be the result, Ulf Kristersson and the Moderates (the Conservatives’ sister party in Sweden) are in a position to form a government. But then the party needs support from the Liberals (L), the Christian Democrats (KD) and the Sweden Democrats (SD).

The latter is controversial.

– The Sweden Democrats will not join a government, but I think they may release Kristersson. Then the party is in a position where they can torment an unstable government, says Sørensen.

With only a two percentage point difference between the blocks, however, nothing has been decided.

The Social Democrats are making the most progress

It is Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson and the Social Democrats who are making the most progress, compared to the election in 2018.

– Andersson is a fresher and more charismatic type than his predecessor Stefan Löfven, says Sørensen.

– The NATO case has also given her momentum.

The problem is that several of Andersson’s allies in the red bloc are returning.

Most problematic is the situation for Annie Lööf and the Center Party, which tends to go back the most of all.

The party has changed sides since the last election.

– It is clear that it has cost them a lot. The Liberals are in the same situation. They began to lose voters when they helped release Andersson as prime minister. Now they are in the process of correcting the course, says Sørensen.

On the bourgeois side, the Sweden Democrats are the most advanced, while the Conservative Party’s sister party, the Moderates, also seems to be rising.

– All in all, is a bourgeois election winner in the cards after eight years of social democratic rule?

– It is completely impossible to say, says Terje Sørensen.

The parliamentary elections in Sweden will be held on 11 September.
