Dead mayor re-elected in Romania

In the Romanian village of Deveselu, the mayor has been re-elected, despite the fact that he died earlier this month from the consequences of corona. In the election, Ion Aliman got 64 percent of the vote.

Aliman, of the social democratic party PSD, died two weeks ago at the age of 56. The popular mayor was at the end of his second term in Deveselu, a southern Romanian village of about 3000 inhabitants.

According to the Election Commission, it was too late to get Aliman’s name off the ballots for the election. Many residents took it yesterday to vote for him as a tribute.

“He was a real mayor to us,” one voter told a local television station. “He stood up for our village, respected all laws. I don’t think we’ll ever get a mayor like him again.”

New elections

The election results in Deveselu have been declared invalid. Residents will soon go to the polls again.

Aliman is not the first Romanian to be elected posthumously as mayor, you know de BBC. In 2008, Neculai Ivascu’s death did not stop the inhabitants of Voinesti village from voting for him en masse. The number two of the election results was then declared the winner by the Election Commission.
