Dead Bruno Arena, of the Prickly Pears – Corriere.it

from Renato Franco

Bruno Arena, comedian and stand-up comedian, who died at 65: the news was given by his son Gianluca. In 2013 he had been the victim of an aneurysm after the recording of an episode of Zelig: the disease had forced him to retire

Bruno Arenathe other half of the Prickly Pears with Max Cavallari, died at the age of 65. He had been in fragile and precarious conditions for some time now, after being a victim of an aneurysm nearly 10 years ago (it was January 17, 2013) while recording an episode of Zelig. Emergency surgery, the comedian had to face a long period in a coma from which he had come out a month and a half later to begin the rehabilitation phase. It had improved, but not enough to be able to savor the applause of the stage again.

Bruno Arena was born in Milan on January 12, 1957 and had taken his first steps in the world of entertainment as a tourist entertainer, but his career developed thanks to the meeting with Max Cavallari in 1988: a walk on the beaches of Palinuro convinces them to form a comic duo and the name Fichi d’India is chosen precisely to pay homage to the plants that frame that walk. Neighbors, Bruno and Max shared everything: the debut on the stage of a club in Varese, the Milan of cabaret, the first television forays (the program Yogurt on Italia 1), the film with Benigni (in Pinocchio they were, perfectly timed, the cat and the Fox), success thanks to jokes from Do you know the latest? (on Channel 5), the consecration to Zeligthe books. Their most famous catchphrase was Ahrarara friends dedicated to the choreographic and folkloric protagonist of the telesales Sergio Baracco: marked rre moscia, screams until becoming purple, Baracco was selling gems which, according to him, were worth millions to the very depreciated figure of one hundred thousand lire.

Bruno Arena’s life had also been marked by another accident. In 1984 he was involved in a serious car accident that forced him to undergo several operations, the consequence was partial loss of vision in one eye. Just this injury, which he had made his Picasso facehe had always been played down in every show with constant jokes about his ugliness; a weakness that had become a comic strength. There has also been some controversy in the career of the Fichi d’India, especially for the participation in various editions of Miss Padanathe beauty contest organized by the Northern League (criticisms especially for some jokes about Sicilians). How can I imagine a future without my “brother” – said Max Cavallari – the curtain is always open, I don’t close it because you must be here with me too.
