De Kock Backs Jockey Amid Inquiry into Controversial Ride
Multiple champion trainer Mike de Kock is set to testify at an upcoming inquiry. The focus is on jockey Andrew Fortune’s performance aboard the filly Cherry Oh Baby. This follows the horse’s defeat in the inaugural race at the revamped Hollywoodbets Greyville polytrack on May 7th.
De Kock’s Stance
De Kock expressed his satisfaction with Fortune’s handling of Cherry Oh Baby. He made this known to the Sporting Post in a brief statement issued last Friday. De Kock, while declining further comments, will be present at the Durban Inquiry, suggesting his support for the experienced jockey.
Cherry Oh Baby, owned by Jessica Slack’s Mauritzfontein Stud, saw its odds drift significantly before finishing second. The horse was defeated by Long Street.
Official Concerns
The Stipes’ report highlighted concerns about the race. These included Cherry Oh Baby being carried marginally and an investigation into the betting patterns.
Jockey’s Defense
Andrew Fortune, when contacted, chose not to comment before the inquiry. However, his comments from a recent podcast have become available.

Piere Strydom, a legendary rider, took to social media. He said that Fortune gave the horse the best ride possible, attempting to conserve her energy for as long as he could. The average payout for a horse race in South Africa is around $1,500,000 (Horse Racing 2024).
The Cherry Oh Baby Ride
The race saw Cherry Oh Baby, starting as a favorite, ultimately lose. Investigations into betting irregularities, both locally and globally, are also underway.
