de Blasio – Telemundo New York (47)

NEW YORK – As New Yorkers visit their closest early voting centers, the city hall unveiled a new plan to keep elections and voters safer by exercising their right to vote.

Entitled as the New York City Election Observer Corps, its purpose is to monitor polling sites in all five boroughs to ensure that voters present are not being harassed or intimidated by others.

“On Election Day we will have hundreds of lawyers, municipal officials and volunteers at the voting centers protecting the voters,” de Blasio said in an interview with our sister network, MSNBC.

During the same interview, de Blasio blamed some of the president’s supporters, who he says have participated in various acts of intimidation across the country.

“Clearly President Trump has tried to discourage people from voting by suggesting that the election results will not be legitimate and some of his supporters have clearly engaged in intimidation across the country, and that will not be tolerated.” he said in the interview.

Volunteer Corps volunteers will report voter intimidation cases to a team of officers, who will coordinate with the police, State Attorney Letitia James and the Board of Elections as necessary.

According to de Blasio, the mayor’s office will recruit civic-minded New Yorkers to be trained by DNYC and the municipal Legal Department to serve as volunteer and impartial observers outside of polling sites throughout the city.
