DC star Jared Leto has been out of control since playing the Joker and House of Gucci proves it

To get straight to the point: Jared Leto is an exceptional actor with great talent. His Oscar for Dallas Buyers Club is fully deserved, and his performance in Requiem for a Dream is so painfully intense that I can only watch the film every few years. but he tends to excess, most likely in his DC role as Joker in Suicide Squad. Completely unrestricted acting might fit into its possible horror use in the Spider-Man universe, but it rolls my toenails in the movie House of Gucci, which came out this week. Especially in one scene.

DC star makes House of Gucci appearance a joke

In the drama about the brutal power struggles within the Gucci fashion empire, Jared Leto plays the eccentric Paolo Gucci: Because of his lack of talent and his whiny manner it is a disappointment for the enterprising father Aldo (Al Pacino), for his brother Rodolfo (Jeremy Irons), his son Maurizio (Adam Driver) and daughter-in-law Patrizia (Lady Gaga) above all an embarrassment.

Leto’s role is therefore that of an outsider, for whose embodiment eccentricity is not an unsuitable means: the shrill color tones and mixed styles of his clothing or the feminine nature of the figure from traditional perspectives are justifiable decisions. Rather, it bothers me that this form of self-expression knows no bounds and thus goes beyond the scope of Ridley Scott’s films.

If Leto for minutes stumbles over the trained Italian accent with a hair-raising fistulous voice or starts singing and dancing in the middle of a sentence for no apparent reason, he appears to be in a different film than his co-stars. It’s like switching from a sometimes satirical drama to the Leto show.

That threw me completely out of the film, especially in one scene: When Aldo reprimanded his son for his cheeky manner and his uninspired designs, it almost seems as if Al Pacino is sending his colleague Jared Leto to school instead.

Because while one exudes control and charisma with calm gestures and flawless timing, the other seems to have forgotten the audience: His expression seems aimless and his sentences involuntarily subdued, as if he lost courage and words in the face of the teacher.

Pacino is thick, but it fits the humorous tone of the film. Leto’s appearance, on the other hand, is neither funny nor poignant or interesting, but rather just as inappropriate as a pimple. And I think roles like the Joker are to blame.

Jared Leto’s DC role contributed to the House of Gucci debacle

Because, in my opinion, Jared Leto was able to shoot really free for the first time during his appearance in Suicide Squad: The character’s psychopathic traits give the performer great freedom in terms of facial expressions, gestures or tone of voice. Outward features such as green hair or false teeth naturally had to fit the vision of director David Ayer, but here too the concept of the role allows gigantic leeway.

If every scene in Suicide Squad becomes the Jared Leto show, that’s not tragic. The character is a self-promoter who, at least since Heath Ledger, has set a precedent for highly individual embodiments. A comic version of this kind is also much less tied to some form of realism than a drama like House of Gucci.

Leto played many roles of a very individual character (for example in Chapter 27), but never one with such minimal limitations as his DC villain. I have the Suspicion that he fell in love with this concept. It just doesn’t fit House of Gucci at all.

Because I want to be able to buy the relationships between the characters from an ensemble film like House of Gucci, despite the different styles of the actors. I take the son of Jeremy Irons from Adam Driver, and from him the grumpy brother of the open-hearted Al Pacino.

But Jared Leto plays so delimited that he is not an outsider in the family, but rather an outsider in the film. I basically see the Joker, only half bald and debatable Italian accent. His drama overclocks the intended satire into a farce.

Every one of his appearances throws me out of the film, that’s the problem. And I say that, although I otherwise really like Jared Leto. He may still be gnawing at his ungrateful DC role. The Joker isn’t just chasing Batman, it seems.
