According to Evija Sedola, a member of the board of SIA Schenker, this is the largest order for electric trucks in Europe. “We hope that the implementation of the prototype will be successful in the coming year, after which we will be able to take the first concrete steps in introducing fully electric vehicles in Latvia and other Baltic countries,” says Sedola.

The Volta Zero is the world’s first fully electric 16-tonne vehicle specifically designed for urban logistics to reduce the environmental impact of urban freight transport. It has an electric range of 150 to 200 km. The new solution is expected to help by 2025 reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 1.2 million tonnes.

The driver of the Volta Zero sits in the central driving position with a much lower seat than in a normal truck. This combination, combined with the greenhouse-style interior design, provides the driver with a wide field of vision of 220 degrees, reducing the dangerous blind spot. The Volta Zero prototype was launched in September 2020, and the first vehicles are expected to reach customers in mid-2022.

As part of the partnership, DB Schenker will launch a prototype Volta Zero truck for the first time in the spring and summer of 2022. The test results will be taken into account in the production of a series of 1,470 vehicles at the plant in Steyr, Austria, under a new contract from Volta Trucks.

The all-electric 16-tonne Volta Zero is intended for use at DB Schenker’s European terminals to transport goods from distribution hubs to the city center and adjacent areas. DB Schenker and Volta Trucks are jointly exploring the wider use of the new technology. The initial deployment will take place in ten different regions in five countries.

The cooperation will also jointly develop specifications for the previously announced 12-tonne Volta Zero model, with tests to speed up vehicle deployment and driver training.

“There are many challenges on the road to carbon neutrality. A comprehensive partnership with Volta Trucks will allow us to significantly accelerate the pace of the transition to electric vehicles and invest in more environmentally friendly transport solutions, bringing us even closer to carbon-neutral logistics,” says DB Schenker’s European Land Transport Division. Vice-President Siril Bonzhan (Cyrille Bonjean).

Volta Trucks is a manufacturer and service provider of all-electric commercial vehicles. The company is headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden, is engineered in the United Kingdom, and will soon have a production facility in Styria, Austria. The company has sales teams in France, Spain, Italy, Germany and the United Kingdom.
