The trial redesign of the Cityring in Darmstadt has started. The employers’ association VhU fears long traffic jams.

Against the background of the redesign of the city ring in favor of cyclists: inside, the Association of Hessian Entrepreneurs’ Associations (VhU) fears long traffic jams. Even with three lanes, traffic jams on the Cityring during normal rush hour, warns Dirk Widuch, head of the Darmstadt and South Hesse office. This means “a considerable burden for commuters, suppliers and companies”. Against the background, it makes no sense to redistribute the traffic area during the corona lockdown.

Traffic attempt begins

At the weekend, the city began to re-mark Zeughausstrasse between Alexanderstrasse and Grafenstrasse. The cycle lane, which was previously perceived as unsafe, has been enlarged, but one lane has been removed for cars. The conversion is part of a traffic test planned for at least six months according to the city council.

The city’s cycling strategy provides for separate cycle lanes to be set up on all major roads. The aim is to “strengthen cycling in the science city Darmstadt as a whole and increase road safety for cyclists”.
