At the second traffic summit, city and district representatives talk about the expansion of cycle paths, an improved traffic flow and the linking of means of transportation.

Leading representatives of the city of Darmstadt and the district of Darmstadt-Dieburg exchanged views on traffic issues again. At the second “traffic summit”, as Darmstadt’s mayor Jochen Partsch (Greens), District Administrator Klaus Peter Schellhaas (SPD) and the first district deputy and roundabout head Robert Ahrnt (Greens) described the meeting, was about cycling, motorized individual transport and the link with the public transport (public transport) spoken. Schellhaas spoke on Thursday of a “colorful bouquet” of projects that the city and district want to promote together.

The three politicians reported that some of the projects agreed almost six months ago had been further developed despite the Corona crisis. A project company for the planning and implementation of new tram lines in the district is to be founded this year. At the same time, individual planning questions for tram lines to Weiterstadt and Groß-Zimmer should be clarified. In addition, a new tram traffic concept for city and district will now be presented to the respective bodies.

In the first half of next year – and thus later than initially planned – demand-oriented shuttle buses (“on-demand shuttle”) with 50 minibuses are to be established in Darmstadt and 25 more in the district. The vehicles will be operated by the local transport company Heag mobilo in Darmstadt and Dadina in the district. In contrast to other large cities, the system is to be digitally linked to the public transport system.

SUMMIT DIPLOMACY

The first traffic summitbetween representatives of the city of Darmstadt and the neighboring district of Darmstadt-Dieburg took place on December 16, 2019. The main focus was on local public transport.

A public eventTo present the results of the first traffic summit has so far not been possible due to the Corona crisis, but is still planned.

OB Partsch said that despite the drastic financial losses caused by the Corona crisis, the turnaround in traffic and the planned expansion projects should be maintained. The city and district also want to promote the expansion of cycle paths that lead to Darmstadt from the surrounding area and are used heavily every day. Specifically, it is about the expansion of the bike path from Darmstadt to Roßdorf and from Seeheim to Darmstadt-Eberstadt.

In addition, a feasibility check for the cycle path connection from Mühltal to Darmstadt is to be developed. The extension of the north-south express cycle path south of Darmstadt with feeder options for other municipalities is also being planned.

In Darmstadt, the traffic flow is also to be improved by optimized traffic light control and drivers are encouraged to use public transport more than before, for example with job tickets. This should also be achieved by expanding the zones for resident parking.

The city and district are also planning to expand train, bus and tram stops into mobility stations and to build further park + ride and bike + ride systems with charging stations for e-bikes. Corresponding projects are planned in Groß-Umstadt / Wiebelsbach and Mühltal as well as in Reinheim, Bickenbach, Groß-Umstadt and Pfungstadt.
