130 refugees in one accommodation: the Asylum Griesheim working group warns of a Covid 19 outbreak in shared accommodation. There were cases of infection in Darmstadt and Groß-Gerau.

The Asylum Griesheim working group warns in an open letter about the risks of refugees becoming densely populated in collective accommodation. The planned closure of accommodation for cost reasons would result in more refugees being accommodated in the remaining facilities. In view of the risk of corona infection, “the better way to use vacancies to equalize the very dense occupancy,” says the letter to the Social Affairs Director of the Darmstadt-Dieburg district.

In Griesheim, for example, 130 and 100 people lived close together in two houses. Kitchens and sanitary facilities would be used jointly without disinfection dispensers being available, it is said. If there is an outbreak of Covid-19, more than 200 people with children will be sentenced to “weeks-like detention,” the working group warns. This could lead to a possible new shutdown for the city of Griesheim and the district.

The district of Darmstadt-Dieburg confirmed to the Frankfurter Rundschau that accommodation will be closed because the number of occupations has decreased significantly due to fewer allocations. There are currently 2205 refugees living in 128 community accommodations. In addition, some accommodations are no longer habitable or the tenancies have expired. “We try to protect the residents and the employees as best as possible and have a concept that has been coordinated with the health department,” said the department. This includes, among other things, a visit ban or checking the cleaning plans. The residents handled the Corona issue very responsibly. Empty housing units would be kept ready for quarantine cases. In addition, there have been no infections so far, the district said.

In other municipalities – for example in Groß-Gerau and Darmstadt – cases of infection have already occurred in refugee institutions. In Darmstadt, three positively confirmed individual cases had to be isolated and their contacts quarantined in the past few weeks. The city said that special residential units would be available. All people have recovered in the meantime. 1,329 people currently live in six Darmstadt first homes.
