Daniel Martínez trades bullets for flowers and sports

“I’m ‘Mexican Will Smith,’” laughs Daniel Martínez, known for his tough character on El señor de los cielos for the past three seasons.

Something is right, because now he has to play the father of a tennis player, just like the American actor had to do in King Richard: The Winning Family, work that earned him an Oscar as an actor this year, the fateful day of the coup been on stage to conductor Chris Rock.

Daniel is part of The Power of Sunflowers, a serial for the Disney+ platform, with a tentative release date of 2023.

“It’s a production about a top-level tennis player who has an accident and ends up in a rehabilitation clinic with several people with disabilities,” he says.

“I am the dad; It is about the return, the redemption of someone, in a very beautiful story. It was filmed here and we are now waiting for a release date,” he adds.

Carla Adell, in the role of tennis player, leads the cast of the series, which also includes Saúl Lisazo, Luz María Zetina and Tomás Rojas.

The synopsis indicates that this is a story that will inspire audiences with messages of perseverance, resilience and optimism and that emphasizes the importance of friendship and family.

Currently, Daniel is part of the new season of The Lord of the Skies, which he entered about three years ago.

“The truth is, I enjoy it and it’s kind of addicting, it’s like The Cowboy Book (comic) and stuff like that. Due to the etiquette of the narco series we tend to play down but it has none of that i.e. the writer is talented and seeks out any situation that matches reality.

“I think I like it because there’s an aspirational thing and it’s addictive, sometimes you can’t stop reading just one chapter and Rafa Amaya (the central character) was also born for the series,” he comments.

He remembers his character was going to be killed off and even in one episode he was shot in the head but then revived.

“There are more and more important places, the idea is to make things bigger and here we are,” he says.

Next week Daniel will be at the cinema in El poderoso Victoria, a film set in 1936 that tells the story of a distant city whose inhabitants decide to build a train to get out of their isolation.

“As a child I didn’t have a train, but I had a highway (laughs), here’s a very good film, about love”, he underlines.
