Daddy Lumba Death: Ghana Mourns Iconic Singer

Ghanaian music legend Daddy Lumba has passed away, leaving a void in teh nation’s music scene. Tributes have poured in from across the country, celebrating his prolific career and profound impact on Ghanaian music.

The news of lumba’s death was met with widespread sorrow, with many public figures and fellow artists sharing their condolences.A Facebook post on Sunday described his “unmatched musical genius” as the “soundtrack to our lives,” noting that while “the beats to his memorable songs may have died down, his enduring legacy will echo through the ages.”

Former Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia stated that Lumba’s passing is “indeed a huge blow not only to the music fraternity but the entire country.” Artists including Sarkodie,Guru,Sista Afia,and M.anifest were among the first to pay tribute,eulogizing the “amazing talent he shared with the world.”

Daddy Lumba, born on September 29, 1964, in Nsuta, Ashanti Region, began his musical journey in the early 1980s. He adopted the stage name Lumba after composing a song dedicated to the freedom fighters of South Africa. His career gained critically important momentum when he collaborated with fellow highlife musician Nana Acheampong, forming the duo known as the Lumba Brothers.

Their debut album, “Yee Ye Aka Akwantuom,” released in 1986, resonated with many, especially Ghanaian immigrants in Europe facing hardship. Following the duo’s split, Daddy Lumba embarked on a prosperous solo career, releasing his first album, “Obi Ate meso Bio,” in 1990.

Lumba’s extensive discography includes celebrated albums such as “Sika Sem,” “Aben Wo Ha,” “Wo Ho Kyere,” “Awosoo,” “Give Peace A Chance,” and “ahenfue Kyinkye.” His most recent song, “Ofon Na Edi Asem Fo,” was released in December 2022.

His last public performance was a Valentine’s Day concert on February 15, 2025, which featured several prominent Ghanaian musicians and was attended by many political and influential figures. Earlier in the month, he had met President Mahama at an event for senior citizens at the seat of government during republic Day celebrations.Lumba was scheduled to embark on a tour of the US and canada later in the year.

The family of Daddy Lumba has requested privacy during this difficult time, and details regarding funeral arrangements are expected to be announced in the coming days.
