The confinement ended and the Czechs decided to go out into the street to celebrate with a dinner on Charles Bridge in Prague. Thousands of people defied health and social distance rules to celebrate the end of the covid-19 crisis, according to the BBC, at the 14th century monument.
The event “The table is set” took place on the Charles Bridge in Prague, “free of tourists”. The Czechs brought food and drink and shared meals at a 500-meter table. Occasional musicians and bands that gave music to the banquet were challenged to liven up the meal. To go to the event, people had to make a prior reservation on Facebook and with one condition: sharing food and drink without any social distance or wearing a mask.
The idea was to celebrate the end of the crisis with people who “are not afraid to take a bite out of someone else’s sandwich,” according to the event’s organizer and owner of a café in the city, Ondrej Kobza, quoted by the BBC. “Society cannot be afraid, otherwise we will have an economic crisis, a depression and this will affect society even more strongly than the covid-19”, he added.
Last week, the government allowed public meetings of up to 1,000 people. Swimming pools, museums, zoos and castles can now open without limits to the number of visitors. Restaurants, bars and pubs have been authorized to serve people for a month.
The Czech Republic recorded about 12,000 cases and 350 deaths from covid-19. The pandemic situation is not under control. There are several local outbreaks in the country, far from Prague, which has registered an average of 15 cases of infection per day.
