Czech singer dies after deliberate corona infection

Folk singer Hana Horka was not vaccinated against the coronavirus, her son tells de BBC. When he and his father (both vaccinated) became infected around Christmas, his mother would have deliberately stayed close to the two, he says, so that she would also contract the virus herself.

‘To sauna and theatre’

In the Czech Republic, people can only go to certain places with a vaccination certificate or proof of recent recovery from an infection, including concert halls. Horka wanted to get infected, especially so she could rejoin her folk group Asonance.

“She should have been quarantined for a week when we became infected,” says her son. “But she was with us the whole time.” The plan worked, because Horka also became infected. Two days before her death, she posted another message on social media looking ahead to her recovery. “Now I can go to concerts, the sauna and the theater,” she wrote.

Last Sunday, the woman is said to have felt a bit better after a period of illness, but after a walk she collapsed when she came home. According to her son, she would have died in bed shortly afterwards because she could no longer breathe. “It was over in ten minutes.”

Heated discussions

The singer’s son tried several times to convince his mother to get vaccinated, but that did not work. According to him, the discussions about the theme often became too heated. He now wants to tell his story to underline the importance of vaccinations.

A record number of 28,469 infections was reported in the Czech Republic yesterday. The government thought of a vaccination obligation for people over 60, which should come into effect in March, but decided not to do so yesterday.
