Czech Republic announces partial quarantine / Day

“The government will restrict movement and contact with other people, with exceptions for going to work, after purchases and to see a doctor,” said Health Minister Romans Primula, who is himself an epidemiologist.

Grocery and convenience stores and pharmacies will be able to continue working, but all other retail stores will be closed from Thursday to November 3.

“The increase is huge, and the measures we have taken so far to stop the growth curve have not been successful,” Prime Minister Andrejs Babišs told reporters.

In the fight against the second wave of Covid-19, the Czech government has already imposed the wearing of masks in most public places, closing schools, restaurants, bars, cinemas, theaters, museums and swimming pools.

There may be a shortage of beds in hospitals, the prime minister said, noting that he had already asked for help abroad. “About 28 American doctors will come to us,” Babish said.

The government has also ordered the provision of 2,000 new hospital beds, some of which will be located on the outskirts of Prague in a field hospital currently under construction.

If the steps taken on Wednesday work, growth should stop within two to three weeks.

As of Wednesday, the country, with a population of 10.7 million, had nearly 194,000 coronavirus cases and more than 1,600 Covid-19-related deaths.

On Tuesday, a record 11,984 new cases of Covid-19 were registered.

The Czech Republic coped relatively well with the first wave of outbreaks in the spring, thanks to timely measures, including a strict quarantine regime.

Most restrictions were lifted before the summer, but new restrictions have been relatively slow.
