Cyprus asks for help to put out forest fires

Drought, strong winds and high temperatures provide good conditions for the forest fire in the south of the island, and several villages have been evacuated.

The firefighting work is difficult, and on Saturday the Cypriot authorities asked several EU countries and Israel to send planes that can assist in the firefighting work.

Cypriot President Nikos Anastasiades says it has been a difficult day and thanks Greece and Israel for agreeing to send firefighting aircraft. British soldiers are already assisting Cypriot firefighters in firefighting on the ground.

The island is currently experiencing a heat wave with temperatures of around 40 degrees.
