The General Contralory of the State accused the former mayor of Guayaquil Cynthia Viteri of violating laws that prohibit nepotism, an infraction that can lead to disqualification from holding public office.
On Sunday afternoon, the Comptroller’s Office reported that ten officials of the Municipality of Guayaquil violated the regulations and that they have 30 days to exercise their right to defense. If sanctioned, they would not be able to hold public office for two years.
According to the statement, the former mayor (who served between 2019 and 2023) hired several relatives of members of the municipal collegiate body, including a spouse and a daughter.
The Organic Law of Public Service (LOSEP) prohibits the authorities from hiring their relatives up to the fourth degree of consanguinity and the second degree of affinity. The same applies to spouses and relatives of members of collegiate bodies. (I)
