The Tour de Bretagne is approaching (April 25 – May 1) and the route was unveiled this Monday morning in Rennes. Last year, six out of seven stages ended in the sprint. This year, Christophe Fossani, the president, has therefore voluntarily “muscled” his career.
He reviewed his copy. Christophe Fossani, president of Tour of Brittany, an event revealing great talents (Alaphilippe, Yates, Vuillermoz, Boasson-Hagen, Kristoff) has considerably hardened the game this year for the 2020 edition which it presented this Monday at the headquarters of West Drinks reindeer. “I heard and listened to your remarks, he slides with a smile. And I wanted to modify a lot of little things to make the journey more difficult … “
“I listened, I heard, and I decided to spice up …”
Last year, however, the organizer was convinced that he had drawn a tricky week with a whole bunch of potential obstacles or identified final circuits. But the favorable wind throughout the race, the good weather and especially the strength of the sprinter teams had been right about his inclinations. Result: six sprints out of seven arrivals, and one of these “finishers”, Lorrenzo Manzin (B & B Hotels – Vital Concept), crowned overall in Saint-Pol-de-Léon.
“I realized that I may have been a bit on the reserve, admits with hindsight Christophe Fossani. In 2020, frankly, it is impossible that there will be six sprint finishes! Reading the different steps, difficulties were placed almost every day. You will have to be there all the time, because apart from the 4th stage, the other six will test the riders. They will have to arrive in shape. “
On the first day, the coast of Mûr-de-Bretagne will be located about fifteen kilometers from the finish in Allineuc. “And afterwards, the circuit will be harder than that of Dinan, the usual scarecrow of the event. The next day, make way for the “black mountains” of South Finistère (Kalifornia, Laz, etc.) before the final in Rosporden. On the third day, in Morbihan, “there will be almost no dish and the runners will be constantly engaged on small roads. It’s a day that will leave its mark, with a bump on the Brandivy circuit. “
The terrible chain of Fougeres – Dinan
After a “break” during a 4th stage of transition to Louisfert, the hard will resume for the last three days. On the 5th day, “It will be the longest stage in the history of the tour (217 km), says Christophe Fossani, with many changes of direction. This step will be hard to control. “
The day before the final arrival, place on the “signature day” of this Tour de Bretagne. The step to check. Several raids will precede entry into Fougères. And once in the fortified city, the runners will be entitled to the same final as that which had crowned Julian Alaphilippe in 2013 (chain of Pinterie coast and Vine coast, with line in front of the town hall). Only the most punchy and full will shine and stay in the game. Dinan, the last day, will offer as usual a great slide show. The Tour de Bretagne, without a doubt, will be played there, in the cobbled streets. After the last two exhausting stages, there could be damage on the last turns of the wheels. “Frankly, it’s been a long time since a journey has not been as hard”, says Christophe Fossani, whose route for this 54th edition will avoid the seaside.
The set will be revealed in March. More than usual World Tour reserves are announced. Foreign formations will be there, just like theoretically all Bretons.
