The company confirmed that no player data was stored on the system that the hackers had managed to compromise. This attack illustrates a growing trend of criminal hackers.

They supplement traditional ransomware with a new tactic, called “doxware”.

Conventional ransomware only encrypts servers, locks data, and charges for the keys. But with the growth of the malware class, companies like CD Projekt are increasingly likely to maintain access to backups that are timely and easily recoverable.

“Doxware” involves stealing the data itself, and demanding payment in return for not publishing it on the web. In the message that was left behind, the hackers asked the Cyberpunk 2077 developer to fulfill their request before February 11, 2021. Otherwise, the hackers claim to be spreading important data belonging to CD Projekt Red.
