Cyberbullying in Tennis: Athletes Speak Out and Seek Solutions

It’s hard to believe that we can feel anything other than benevolent interest (or a bit of tension for the most emotionally invested) watching the matches of Roland-Garros and its champions with chiseled racket strokes. And yet. The sporting world, and more specifically tennis, is not immune to the scourges that plague society in general.

We observe it in other athletic domains, by considering the many hyper damning #MeToo investigations that may have exploded in the press in recent years, for example. But it is also an even more insidious form of violence that must be taken into account: cyberbullying. Athletes, and sportswomen, are largely victims. And do not hesitate to denounce the thing.

This is for example the case of Alizé Cornet, who could testify. The pro says the terms : “These are hate speech, insults, death threats, a lot of: ‘stop tennis’… At my age, I may have a little more perspective on that. At 20, I wouldn’t have experienced it the same way“. And she’s not the only one.

“I will find you, I will kill you”

In the pages of franceinfo, several sportswomen reveal an equally abject violence. Like the young tennis pro Alice Tubello, 22, who says: “It could be all, it’s a lot of insults, on my parents. Sometimes it can be creepy and it’s not pleasant. They are also threats“.

>> “Finally she died this bitch“: The bullies of Lindsay, who committed suicide at 13, continue to insult her, even after her death <

What kind of threats exactly? Alice Tubello clarifies: “…’I will find you, I will kill you’“. Pure and harsh death threats therefore. For simple tennis matches, yes yes. Even so, one wonders what kind of situations could exactly give meaning to this kind of virulent sentences.

Still on the franceinfo site, this equally chilling testimony from Elsa Jacquemot, 175th player in the world: “My first messages, I received them at the age of 15. They tell me: ‘we’re going to kill you, we know you have a brother’. It’s violent and it obviously has an impact”. Again and again, death threats…

>> “She will join her“: Lindsay’s best friend also harassed after the suicide of the 13-year-old teenager, she reveals the horrors she receives <

Logically, sportswomen fear for their health, and especially for their safety. And they require concrete and immediate action. And precisely, measures have been taken by the French Tennis Federation: the free provision applications to filter the most hateful messages who flood social networks with each competition. Take them into account and delete them.

This is for example the concept of smartphone apps like “Bodyguard”. A sufficient measure to preserve the mental health and integrity of tenniswomen and tennismen? You be the judge…
