Cyber criminals capitalize on corona crisis | Coronavirus is spreading

Computer criminals have taken advantage of the corona crisis. For example, they have responded quickly to the growth of working from home and video conferencing and were too quick for security officers, the European Cyber Security Agency (ENISA) notes.

Cyber criminals quickly adapted to the pandemic and its consequences, ENISA writes in its annual report. They are increasingly successful in targeting people in a very targeted manner. For example, they used new, cunning ways to steal or reuse login data, lure people to phishing websites, or pretend to be acquaintances to get information. They also increasingly managed to penetrate telephones and other mobile devices.

These dangers will only increase, warns ENISA. Computer security guards are already working hard to protect video conferences, cell phones and all the sudden work traffic between the kitchen table and the office against malicious parties. If they also start using artificial intelligence for deepfakes, “we will see the number of successful and undetectable operations grow”.

Deepfakes are image edits that allow the maker to put something in the mouth of people in a film. The technology is improving rapidly and can be found everywhere.

ENISA also notes that young people in particular were bullied more often online. That too will increase, the agency fears.
