Cyber criminals are hacking a company that will test vaccines against corona

The cyber criminals belong to the group Maze, which is known for its ransomware attacks and the public reporting of these hacks. The hacker group Maze even has a website with a list of victims.

Stolen data from each victim is posted online, in the hope that a company will pay the ransom. In the case of Hammersmith Medicines Research, these are medical records of people who have participated in medicine tests.

Fully recovered

The British company, which previously tested vaccines against Ebola, claims the hack took place on March 14. “We stopped the attack and quickly restored all of our functionality,” Malcolm Boyce, director of Hammersmith Medicines Research, told Computer Weekly.

Still, the Maze criminals have managed to steal sensitive data. The medical records contain questionnaires and copies of identity documents of at least 2300 people. The company has no plans to pay the ransom demanded: Boyce would rather go bankrupt than give money to criminals, he says.

Maze ransomware

The criminals behind the Maze ransomware promised a week ago that they would not attack medical companies or other health organizations during the corona crisis.

Maze publishes the names of his victims and parts of the captured data to pressure companies and organizations to pay. In addition to losing face, the criminals argue that the fine for a data breach may be higher than the ransom they ask.

Help

Renowned cyber security company Emnisoft reports that it helps health care providers free of charge if they are hit by a hack or ransomware attack during the corona outbreak. Kaspersky and Bitdefender, both known for their antivirus software, have made their products free to health organizations.
