Armstrong also had a strong character on a personal level. As a little boy, he got the last name of his stepfather Terry and never changed it. “Lance Armstrong, that’s a good name. Much better than Lance Gunderson (the surname of his real father Eddie), that’s a crazy name.”
Heavy-handed stepfather
Still, Armstrong doesn’t remember his stepfather with great pleasure: “He beat me all the way up with a plank. Sometimes just because I left my drawer open.”
Former soldier Terry Armstrong agrees: “I pushed him to the limit. Without me, he would never have been such a great champion. I always coached him, but gave him too little love.”
Next week, the second and last part of the documentary LANCE will be broadcast.
