Currently, Europe cannot survive without Gazprom

Natural gas has long been not an energy resource, but a political tool, the energy minister said regarding the words of the Russian ambassador

Europe currently cannot survive without Gazprom. If we look only at Bulgaria – diversification can be reached up to a certain point. That is, this contract that we have, if it is implemented, we will have a relatively good balance. Prices may also partially fall. This is what the resigned Minister of Energy Alexander Nikolov said in the program “The day begins with Georgi Ljubenov” on BNT.

According to him, if the war in Ukraine ends, there is a huge chance that prices will be at a different level and gas supplies to Europe from Gazpromexport will look different.

Regarding the statement of Russian Ambassador Eleonora Mitrofanova about gas, he stated that natural gas has long been not an energy resource, but a political tool.

“The latest proposal regarding the existing and still active contract between Bulgargaz and Gazpromexport is from Bulgargaz to Gazpromexport. There is nothing that Bulgargaz could do in addition. The latest annex, which is also working for the two companies, was proposed by “Bulgargaz”.

He defined the statements of President Rumen Radev and Deputy Prime Minister Cornelia Ninova regarding the situation in the energy sector as strange.

“I have had the honor and pleasure to communicate several times in direct conversations with the president. And I am convinced that his wishes are for the strategically correct development of Bulgaria. But during these 8 months, I was able to see how important the team behind is. What data is extracted from his administration I cannot say, but I can provide everything that is available with us”.

Regarding Cornelia Ninova’s claims, he said it was very disappointing.

“Personally for me, against the background of the things that were happening, I tried to get to know not only the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister in charge, but also the colleagues from the Council of Ministers in as much detail as possible. But as disappointing as it is, it is not at all surprising. In recent weeks, everyone decided to engage in pre-election rhetoric, which is sad for society,” he added.

Minister Nikolov stated that the contract for the 7 tankers was with a company from the USA.

“The offer is divided into two parts. The binding part is for the first 3, and the remaining 4 in 2023 are possible, but they can also be refused. The mechanism of price and payment method can be renegotiated. There is somewhere to unload. And the one closest in time – the month of October – is assured where it will be unloaded. The other two are still in talks and we will leave them open – that is, everyone can decide. The second and third cargoes can be delivered to alternative terminals. Even if it doesn’t, there is a mechanism by which they can be bought back or sold at a profit for the company.”
