According to the results of a poll carried out Sunday at the exit of the ballot boxes during the first round of the presidential election, Poland will see confronting, during the second round, the outgoing president Andrzej Duda and his liberal rival, Rafal Trzaskowski.

There is no longer any doubt: there will be a second round at thePolish presidential election. According to the results of a poll carried out at the polls during the first round on Sunday June 28, the outgoing president, the conservative Andrzej Duda, will face his liberal rival Rafal Trzaskowski on July 12.

Andrzej Duda won the support of 41.8% of Poles while the mayor of Warsaw was supported by 30.4% of the voters, according to this poll carried out by the Ipsos institute and published by the big television channels, after the polling stations closed. The final results of the first round will be known later in the week.

The outgoing president welcomed his result. “I win this 1st round thanks to your voices in an absolutely indisputable way. The advance is huge and I am grateful to you,” he said during his election night in Lowicz in central Poland.

“The campaign will continue, we are having a very important discussion on Poland, we are asking the question of the Poland of the future,” said the outgoing president before congratulating Rafal Trzaskowski.

For the liberal candidate, the second round will be “a choice between open Poland (…) and those who seek conflicts all the time”. “I will be the candidate for change,” he promised. “The monopoly of power never ends well,” insisted the candidate of the main opposition party, the Civic Platform.

Controversial reform

The re-election of the outgoing president, an ally of the government, is crucial for the conservative nationalist ruling Law and Justice Party (PiS), which plays the future of its reforms, including the controversial one of justice.

The president, who will face the liberal mayor of Warsaw, Rafal Trzaskowski, in the second round, has the power to veto laws.

Rafal Trzaskowski, head of Civic Platform, has promised to put an end to reforms that he believes undermine democracy.
