Cultured mouse intestine suitable for animal feed research

Scientists will soon be able to investigate the effect of certain new animal feeds on the basis of loose, specially grown mini mouse intestines.

The intestines were cultivated by Wageningen University and Research (WUR) from original mouse intestines. A big advantage is that fewer test mice are needed. Examination with a loose bowel is also easier.

The animal science group in Wageningen determined that the gut organoids, or mini intestines, react just as to protein sources as the original intestines in the body of a real mouse. The mini intestines can now be used for research into the transport of the feed, the interaction between different ingredients and also the reaction of the intestinal wall.

Alternative protein sources

The Netherlands wants to rapidly reduce the number of tests on live animals, says a spokesperson for WUR. Manufacturers are now looking for alternative protein sources such as insects and algae and these will soon have to be tested.

Animal nutrition manufacturers also have their own labs, but Wageningen now offers a new additional opportunity for research. WUR is also busy researching mini-organs from animals other than mice.
